Twitch and Facebook Gaming, two competitors in the world of livestreaming, experienced significant growth during 2020. According to a comparative study by StreamElements and Rainmaker.gg, Twitch and Facebook Gaming recorded viewership records for a year, until January 2021. On the graphs presented, we can clearly see that January 2021 was the best month compared to last year for both platforms. In fact, Twitch and Facebook Gaming recorded more than double their audience between January 2020 and January 2021.
While Twitch's audience remains much larger than Facebook Gaming's, its rise during 2020 has been just as meteoric. During the second quarter of 2020, Facebook Gaming saw a 75% increase in its viewing hours. Let's not forget that Facebook is a relatively newcomer to the world of livestreaming, having only just launched in 2018. This success is largely due to the pandemic and the many lockdowns around the world. This situation will continue to benefit the gaming industry until it stabilizes. With such impressive numbers, one could even consider that gaming will not lose value, even if a "return to normal life" were to happen. Video games are becoming more and more popular in homes and are becoming an increasingly popular pastime, even among older people.
As for the most streamed games on Twitch, Rust takes first place, followed closely by the classics League of Legends, Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone and Minecraft. StreamElements does not fail to point out that Twitch has the ability to transform any game into a blockbuster, as the platform is so important and the creators are so influential.
