Up to 18 CPU hearts for the next Snapdragon X2?

Up to 18 CPU hearts for the next Snapdragon X2?

The year 2024 was marked by the launch of the Snapdragon X Series. The latest batch of Qualcomm's Arm processors embodied the American company's new ambitions in the personal computer market, and was incidentally the first line of chips to power Copilot+ computers.

While the public has not really been there and the range continues to expand at the bottom with entry-level references, Qualcomm is necessarily preparing for what's to come. It will materialize by what we will call, until proven otherwise, Snapdragon X2. Apparently, this series will offer more CPU cores.

From 12 to 18 cores

The German site WinFuture has shared new data concerning this second generation of Snapdragon X Series – codenamed Project Glymur. They come from import-export databases. They concern an SC8480XP processor.

According to the media, which is based on the characteristics of this chip, the series will therefore offer up to 18 Oryon V3 cores. This would represent a 50% increase compared to the current generation. Indeed, the flagship, the Snapdragon X Elite X1E-84-100 has 12 CPU cores. Its successor would therefore gain six – not to mention the new architecture.

The source also mentions a SiP design. It thinks that this is the acronym for System-in-Package. Concretely, it would be a single chip integrating RAM (like the Intel Core Lunar Lake) but also flash memory. In what proportion? WinFuture reports 48 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD – in any case for this SC8480XP with 18 CPU cores.

Desktop computers with Snapdragon?

Our colleague adds that the processor would have previously been tested with an all-in-one cooling system notably consisting of a 120 mm fan. A solution justified by its TDP exceeding the 80 W required for the first generation Snapdragon X Elite. The source does not exclude experiments with a view to developing real desktop systems. Let's clarify that apart from a few mini-PCs, such as the Geekom QS1 Pro, the first generation of Snapdragon X Series targets almost exclusively laptops.

Finally, the commercial name remains very uncertain at this stage. However, the designation "Snapdragon X2 Ultra Premium" has circulated. Well, nothing is set in stone at this stage. Especially since we shouldn't expect a release before next year - still according to WinFuture.
