Your chromecast with Google TV goes to Android 14, update it

Announced several months ago, the Android 14 update for Chromecast with Google TV is finally taking shape. Google stopped producing these devices in 2024, in favor of the Google TV Streamer. But the company had promised software support, and this update is proof of that. While it brings stability improvements and a security patch, it may also mark the end of major updates for these aging models.

Android 14 arrives on Chromecast with Google TV

Google has started to deploy version UTTC.241218.004 of Android 14 for its Chromecast with Google TV. This update, which varies in size between 743 MB and 809 MB depending on the model, upgrades the operating system from Android 12 to Android 14. It also includes the security patch from January 2025.

Beyond Along with general performance improvements, this update brings compatibility with the Find My Remote feature, which makes it easier to find the remote (like on the Google TV Streamer), as well as a customizable button. However, given the technical limitations of the onboard hardware, no major visual changes or revolutionary features are to be expected. Since the rollout is gradual, not all users will receive it immediately. To check its availability, you can access the menu Settings > System > About > Update system update.

An update that could be the last

While Android 14 improves the stability of Chromecasts, it could also mark their last major update. Since August 2024, Google has stopped producing and marketing these devices, focusing now on the new Google TV Streamer. According to Google's support schedule, the Chromecast 4K will receive security updates until September 2025, while the HD model will still receive patches until September 2027. However, it is unlikely that any further major updates will be rolled out beyond security patches.

Meanwhile, users of the 2nd generation Chromecast and Chromecast Audio are experiencing a very annoying bug. Google is not abandoning them, however, as the company has promised a patch to resolve the issue. Without offering any major new features, the company is aware that there are many users of the old Chromecast, and that they expect a minimum of support to continue using their hardware.
