Last September, YouTube reduced recommendations for French and European teens for videos comparing physical characteristics and idealizing certain body types over others (specific weights, body types), or that promote bullying and social aggression. The video platform is now continuing to limit the exposure of its youngest users by adding new restrictions.
Fewer toxic videos for teens
Recommendations for videos promoting dubious financial advice will also be subject to a restriction, here also in France and elsewhere in Europe. The same will apply to videos showing malicious or "negative" behavior, such as "cruel and malicious" acts or encouraging "ridiculing others".
These categories of videos are "harmless in a single viewing", but "[they] could be problematic for some teenagers if viewed repeatedly", explains YouTube. The platform takes as an example these videos that offer strategies to get rich quickly, to cheat on exams or that make fun of people in the street.
In addition, from March 19, content creators everywhere will no longer be able to include links, logos or refer to gambling sites that are not certified by Google. "Content promising guaranteed winnings may be removed, even if the gambling site concerned is approved", adds the service. Videos showing or promoting online casinos will be "restricted to logged-in users of legal age."
These measures will have an impact on creators specializing in this type of content, however the company is seeking to protect its users, especially the youngest.
