Since Sony Pictures made the return of the 28 Days Later saga official, viewers have been hoping that Cillian Murphy will return to his role as Jim. While Danny Boyle and Alex Garland will be back to write and direct this sequel, the story should evolve around new characters and new stakes.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Cormer, Ralph Fiennes, and Jack O'Connell will play survivors of the apocalypse, nearly three decades after the events of the first film. We already know that the Fury Virus escaped from a biological weapons laboratory and forced humanity to live in very strict confinement.
It will follow a community of survivors on a small island that is connected to the mainland only by a road, placed under high protection. When one of their own is sent on a mission far from their refuge, he discovers that the infected have mutated, but that other survivors have too...
What place for Cillian Murphy?
Some spectators thought they had seen him zombified, others hoped that he would appear briefly to help the new characters... Finally, Cillian Murphy will be back but the contours of this appearance are still vague. The announcement was made during CinemaCon in Las Vegas, a meeting of studios with theater operators and journalists. On the set, the director said Murphy would be back, but “we'll probably have to wait a little longer”.
The idea of a place in the second film, this time directed by Nia DaCosta, is now making its way. Called 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, the film shot directly after 28 Years Later. It was written by Danny Boyle and remains very mysterious. Sony Pictures has only shown two photos of the project.
Ralph Fiennes nevertheless appears as an antagonist to the journalists present on site. Nia DaCosta specifies that he is "crazy", enough to bring Jim out of retirement? Answer in January 2026 for the release of 28 Years Later: The Temple of Bones. Until then, viewers have a date with the franchise on June 18th with Danny Boyle's film.
Remember that a third film is on the program for the coming years, proof, if any were needed, that zombie sagas are far from dead in the cinema.
