Are you waiting for the release of The Batman 2? We are too, but we have to admit that Matt Reeves' Dark Knight is taking his time before returning to our screens. In the meantime, French-speaking readers are in for a nice surprise: the arrival of Absolute Batman at Urban Comics. This June, Scott Snyder, one of the most influential authors in the DC Comics universe, is making a strong comeback on the comics scene, with a prestigious edition celebrating his work on the Dark Knight. With Scottish artist Jock, the duo takes over the reins of a cult character.
The Return of King Snyder
In 2010, Batman goes through a period of major transformation. Under the pen of Grant Morrison, Bruce Wayne, the original Batman, is transported back in time by Darkseid's Omega rays (Final Crisis). His former protégé, Dick Grayson – the first Robin who became Nightwing – then takes on the role of the Dark Knight. This change of identity brings a new dynamic to the character: Dick Grayson embodies a more human and empathetic Batman, but also more vulnerable in the face of the darkness of Gotham.
It was in this context that Snyder, then a young writer at DC Comics, was entrusted with a narrative arc. Little known at the time, he had distinguished himself with his horror writing and his American Vampire series. With Dark Reflection, he delivers a captivating plot that explores the darkest corners of Gotham and highlights Dick Grayson's emotional flaws as Batman. The return of Bruce Wayne, meanwhile, is dedicated by the masterful Court of Owls story arc. It established Scott Snyder as a must-read author, and relaunched Batman with the first issue of the New 52.
Absolute Batman
With this Absolute Edition, fans will have the opportunity to rediscover Snyder and Jock's memorable Batman debut in a deluxe format. Their collaboration not only enriched the character's mythology, but also ushered in a new era for the Dark Knight, blending psychological horror with spectacular action.
Çwhat's it about?
Bruce Wayne started from scratch. He isn't the scion of a wealthy Gotham City empire; he's the son of a public school teacher who, as a child, experienced the unimaginable horror of a shooting, forever changing the trajectory of his life. With no unlimited resources to support him, no mansion or butler to care for him, Bruce has become a different kind of Batman altogether, one both cerebral and ultra-muscular, living in Gotham's toughest, most deprived neighborhoods, far from high society. And as Black Mask's gang sows terror in the city, he won't hesitate to unleash a torrent of violence against his adversaries to make the message clear: there's a new Batman in town.
