BMW unveils how it plans to offer a top-notch sound experience on its future range of electric cars. At the helm is a new audio system created for the occasion.

BMW's next electric cars will be noisy, but you'll enjoy it

One of the big differences between an electric car and a combustion engine car, besides the fuel required, is the absence of noise. The car runs in almost absolute silence, which, the first time you get on on board, can surprise drivers accustomed to the roar of engines. When developing their electric models, some manufacturers have chosen to artificially reproduce the noise of their thermal equivalent.

This is the case of Ferrari, for example, which intends to make you hear what its electric model has under the hood. For its future models in the Neue Klasse family, BMW wants to go much further with a complete sound environment promising to “create an emotional interaction between the driver and their vehicle“. The HypersonX system wants all the sounds emitted by the car, from the lighting of the screen to acceleration, a unique experience, nothing less.

BMW is taking care of the sounds its future electric cars will emit with a new audio system

The HypersonX environment “includes 43 sound signals and specific driving sounds for Personal and Sport modes. The multidimensional spectrum precisely adapts the sounds to the driving situation […]”. It ultimately has fewer basic sounds than its predecessor, but plays on the broadening of the acoustic spectrum to add “color, depth and precision to the whole“.

Thus, “during acceleration, for example, the vehicle gives the impression of moving between different three-dimensional sound layers, thus authentically transporting the sensation of speed and the typical BMW driving dynamics into the cabin“. All these abstract notions will of course be appreciated differently depending on who is behind the wheel. But given how the brand is clearly focusing a lot on this aspect, which some would find incidental, we are still curious to hear the result.
