Users are finding that after updating to iOS 18.4, CarPlay has become unusable. Some have found a workaround while Apple looks into the bug.
Drivers with an Android smartphone have Android Auto, those with an iPhone have CarPlay. The principle remains the same: connect your mobile to your car to enjoy a dedicated interface displayed on the vehicle's screen. When everything works, it's very practical. But since the start of the rollout of iOS 18.4, there's been a problem. The operating system update appears to have broken CarPlay, at least in its wireless functionality.

The iPhone keeps connecting and disconnecting, explains one user on Reddit. Another talks about an “unstable” connection, requiring Bluetooth pairing to be initiated multiple times. The bug doesn’t just affect one type of car. Mazda, Audi, Ford, and Honda models are affected.
The iOS 18.4 update makes CarPlay unusable, but you can try this
The good news is that some people have managed to get CarPlay working properly again with a simple trick. The bad news is that it sometimes takes several attempts before it takes effect. There's no logic to it. It can take two tries, or seven or eight. The principle is simple: you need to delete your vehicle from CarPlay from your iPhone and then pair your smartphone with the car again:
- Go to the iPhone's Settings app.
- Open General then CarPlay.
- Swipe your vehicle's name to the left and tap Delete.
- Restart the connection process.
Alternatively, you can connect your iPhone to the car with a cable. According to reports, Volkswagen is aware of the bug, but the manufacturer says it's up to Apple to take action. The brand with the bitten apple isn't known for communicating about this type of incident, even though it usually ends up taking care of it. Let's just hope the issue is fixed before the rollout of iOS 18.5, the first beta of which is already available.
