Demon Slayer, Naruto: 7 Anime Characters Overrated by Fans

Demon Slayer, Naruto: 7 Anime Characters Overrated by Fans

Characters are essential to enjoying an anime, to the point that they can decide whether a viewer continues watching or not. While some are unanimously loved, others divide fans. Indeed, some characters—especially the most popular ones—arguably don't deserve all the love they get. This is the case for these 7 characters that we, as well as some fans, consider overrated.

#1 Giorno Giovanna - Jojo's Bizarre Adventure

If Giorno is not on our list of the 10 best characters in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, it is not without reason. For the first time in Hirohiko Araki's work, we have the impression that Jojo is not the main character of his part. The members of Bucciarati's group all display more engaging personalities and more captivating motivations than Giorno. He contributes his part, notably thanks to Gold Experience, but he remains in the background. We would have liked to see him again in Stone Ocean to bring a little more texture, but that wasn't the case. Aside from being one of the most powerful JoJo characters, he is unfortunately almost forgettable.

#2 Zenitsu Agatsuma - Demon Slayer

Zenitsu brings a touch of lightness to Demon Slayer thanks to his whimsical personality. Although he's a very popular character—he even finished first in the popularity poll celebrating the manga's end in Japan—it must be said that he's not always easy to get on with. His yelling, his jokes, and his obsession with Nezuko can quickly become annoying. He's not a bad character in himself, he even has some great moments, but he can quickly become unbearable, especially in the anime.

#3 Ash Ketchum - Pokémon

The first character that comes to mind when you think of Pokémon is Ash. And for good reason: he's the hero of the anime and has accompanied generations of children for over twenty years. Yet, Ash is far from being the best trainer. He was a perpetual loser for a long time, suffering resounding defeats in numerous Pokémon Leagues. It wasn't until 2022 that he finally achieved recognition by winning the Alola League and becoming the best trainer in the world. It was about time.

#4 Beerus - Dragon Ball Super

Beerus's appearance in Battle of Gods was very significant. He paved the way for new horizons, but, like the treatment of the multiverse in Dragon Ball Super, he too often remained in the background. Beerus doesn't do much besides sleep and eat. He's the goal for our heroes to achieve, and he's aware of it, but he makes no effort to show off. We'd really like to see him back in action, at least in the anime. In the manga, he participates in a battle royale between all the gods, an event in which he's even one of the two victors. We really hope he'll get back in the ring in the future, especially against Black Freezer.

#5 Natsu Dragneel - Fairy Tail

Demon Slayer, Naruto: 7 Anime Characters Overrated by Fans

Fairy Tail is a bit of a "shonen-type," meaning it doesn't go beyond what's expected of it and remains firmly anchored in very classic codes. As such, the same goes for Natsu. The protagonist of the anime, he's a very traditional shonen hero - maybe even too much so. While he's not that different from Luffy or Naruto, his problem is that he comes after them, with even less depth. He remains an enjoyable character, but it's hard to consider him one of the best in his work, let alone one of the greats of anime.

#6 Hinata Hyûga - Naruto

Demon Slayer, Naruto: 7 Anime Characters Overrated by Fans

Sakura is arguably the most criticized female character in Naruto. This criticism is partly justified by a development that has never truly lived up to her potential. She has often been belittled in order to, conversely, glorify Hinata, especially regarding her relationship with Naruto. However, the latter does not receive a better treatment than Sakura. Her shy nature often confines her to a background role, even in The Last, a film in which she is one of the protagonists. She remains a valuable support for Naruto, and she proved it against Pain, but we would have liked to remember her for more memorable moments.

#7 Himiko Toga - My Hero Academia

Villains are often highly regarded, sometimes even more so than heroes. Toga has managed to achieve this status, even if it remains difficult to understand. She has begun a redemption arc, but it is far too quick and has been too easily accepted, including by fans. While her parents' actions are clearly reprehensible, that doesn't erase the fact that she took the lives of many people. Some attribute this indulgence to its character design and yandere vibe, but it would be a bit simplistic to stop there.
