Duolingo announces worrying news

In 2025, if users are used to one thing, it's the appropriation of artificial intelligence in all its forms. The field of learning is particularly affected by this phenomenon, which is why Duolingo has decided to become an AI-first company. The company proudly announces this in an email from the CEO posted on LinkedIn. We read:

Looking to the future

Overall, Duolingo will be some changes to integrate artificial intelligence into its internal processes. This won't be a small step, since some jobs and contract workers will be directly replaced by the use of AI, which is much more intuitive, economical, and above all practical, according to Duolingo's CEO. He explains:

What does this mean for the job market?

Learning a language with artificial intelligence is not surprising. It's one of the most relevant uses we can see. However, it is a hard blow for the human employment sector, which is inevitably suffering from Duolingo's decision. The company is thus modifying its AI usage charter, making it an absolute priority when designing projects, basing the distribution of its workforce on this criterion and even requiring its employees to know how to use it properly.

A change for users?

For the moment, this decision only concerns the internal distribution of tasks and users of the Duolingo platform should not bear the brunt. However, although the firm promises us more natural, adapted teaching, more training and personalized mentoring, there is no indication that this will be added to the basic version of the app.

A premium plan already exists on Duolingo, but prices could increase over time, and AI-related features could also be offered only to paying subscribers. We will have to be patient before seeing the consequences of this decision.
