Half of Americans watch their series and films with subtitles, even when they are in their native language. To understand whispered dialogue or simply to have visual support when the scene is noisy, subtitles are particularly useful. But Netflix, which is often one step ahead of its competitors, did not until now offer options other than subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing, the famous "language (CC)". These accessibility options obviously allow you to read the lines, but also and above all, indications on the sound effects or the music used to accompany the story.
Netflix announces a new form of subtitle, already offered by some of its competitors, including Apple TV+. From now on and on a selection of content, it is possible to watch a program in English and subtitled in English. On its blog, the red N explains: “we are introducing a new option: subtitles in the original language which only display spoken dialogue“. The firm specifies that this option was launched with the latest season of You, premiering on April 24th.
For everyone?
This new feature does not apply to English speakers only and is being rolled out across the company's entire catalog. This also includes French-language productions, although the list has not been released. We can imagine that all original French releases will be offered with these improved subtitles for those who watch Netflix movies and series "in a noisy room, who want to catch up on an episode while someone is sleeping or simply to follow Joe's downward spiral, you now have more subtitle options to choose from".
Even more customization
While the options offered on the language and accessibility side are not enough, remember that it is possible to modify the appearance of the subtitles with a simple click in the platform's player. On the web, you need to go to the “Account” tab in the “Profiles” section. There you can configure your preferred display and thus choose the text size, the font and obviously the color by clicking on “modify settings”.
À Please note that changes made to your web browser or any other device will affect your experience on all your configurations. It is obviously possible to return to the basic settings by performing a reset in the same way.
