Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion: What's the Newly Released Remaster Worth?

Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion: What's the Newly Released Remaster Worth?

Who would have thought that Elder Scrolls would be a franchise where one of the games could be launched in the greatest silence? Shadowdropping, a process whereby a studio announces the existence of a game and makes it available immediately, is an increasingly common practice, but it generally affects independent games or those with a lower profile.

This is why the leak of the Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion remaster had the effect of a bomb on the fan community. Officially announced at 5 p.m. this April 22nd by Bethesda, the title was immediately available for purchase. The remaster includes several notable improvements: modernized gameplay, a complete visual and graphic overhaul, reworked animations, and new dialogue writing. After a few hours of availability, what do players think?

Extremely positive initial reviews... except for one point

Overall, the news was extremely well received by fans. Oblivion is one of players' favorite games, so a remaster is truly good news. Especially since this one doesn't just modernize the graphics. According to most testers, it's more of a remake as the changes are so major.

On Steam, the game has nearly 9,000 reviews. The final rating is very positive for the moment. However, there are regional differences. Indeed, while Oblivion Remastered is unanimously acclaimed in English-speaking countries, this is a little less the case in France. The entire rewriting of the dialogues has led to the absence of French dubbing, which is a negative point for many. A huge number of players experienced the first version of the game in French, and were hoping to find certain legendary lines in this new version.

Others manage to get past it thanks to their personal comfort with English, and still others are waiting for an update to bring French dubbing. It is more likely that this feature will only arrive with community mods boosted by artificial intelligence in the coming weeks. Other than that, it's a success for the remaster. The decision to launch it as a shadow drop is still a mystery, but it gives players something to think about while they wait for the release of Elder Scrolls VI.

The game is available for 54.99 euros and includes all the DLC from the original title in addition to the base game.
