Ghost of Yotei, a “woke” game? The developers respond frankly

Without even a leak about it, Ghost of Yotei announced its release date last week with a 3-minute "Onry's List" trailer. A trailer that sets the context for the game's story and particularly for the new character, Atsu, who replaces Jin Sakai in this sequel. This huge change from Tsushima has stuck in the craw of some, but for the wrong reasons. Through an interview, the studio puts an end to a pre-release controversy through Jason Connell, creative and art director at Sucker Punch, who responds bluntly.

The heroine of Ghost of Yotei is not a problem

With Jin Sakai's story in Ghost of Tsushima having ended according to Sucker Punch, the studio wanted to move on and chose to introduce a new character into this universe, Atsu, who is a woman. A decision, however banal, that was enough to ignite the powder keg and justify accusations of "wokeism" for some.

It also didn't take long before these same people delved into the life of Erika Ishii, who plays Atsu and who has already She has voiced many video game protagonists, such as Rook in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. A queer, Asian person who has spoken out against transphobia and has notably raised funds for LGBTQ+ organizations. As a result, she has received a sad wave of hate. Variety addressed these accusations and asked Jason Connell if a female protagonist for Ghost of Yotei was the right choice for this story.

"It's a pretty dangerous landscape, which makes her a great fit for it. You wouldn't expect her to be this powerful, but she goes on a quest for revenge, which is probably quite unexpected for some." Over time, it would be called Onry, because this Japanese folk legend depicts an immortal ghost seeking revenge. And it fits perfectly. Onry are usually stories of female revenge. This "affair" surrounding Ghost of Yotei is a clear reminder of what happened during the reveal of Naughty Dog's Intergalactic Heretic Prophet and even The Last of Us 2.
