Google continues to sort through its range of connected objects. This time, it's the older Nest thermostats that are affected. In Europe, the situation is even more radical.

Google is discontinuing its Nest thermostats in Europe because our heating systems are too complicated

For several years, Google has been gradually simplifying its Nest product offering for the connected home. After the discontinuation of several connected speakers and surveillance cameras in 2024, it is now the turn of the oldest thermostats to be abandoned. Launched in 2011 with the promise of revolutionizing home heating management, this range has long been a symbol of innovation in connected objects. But faced with the evolution of technological standards and increased security requirements, the company chooses today to turn the page.

In an official statement, Google announces that three historical models of the Nest Learning Thermostat will lose support starting October 25, 2025. These are:

  • Nest Learning Thermostat 1st generation (2011)
  • the 2nd generation model intended for the consumer market American (2012)
  • of the 2nd generation version specific to Europe (2014)

Specifically, these devices will no longer be able to be managed via the Google Home and Nest applications, will no longer receive software updates, and will lose essential features such as Home/Away Assist, smart programming, or voice control with Google Assistant. However, users will still be able to set the temperature and schedules directly on the device.

Google also cancels the launch of new Nest thermostats in Europe

The impact is even more noticeable for European users. Google says it will no longer introduce new Nest thermostats on the continent due to the great variety of local heating systems. Each country, and sometimes even each region, uses different standards, making it difficult to design a single product suitable for all homes. For now, only current models, such as the Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd generation (2015) and the Nest Thermostat E (2018), will continue to be sold while supplies last, with continued software support.

To support this transition, Google is offering discounts on the Nest Learning Thermostat 4th generation to US and Canadian users. However, in Europe, no exchange offer is planned at this time, leaving affected users without an official solution.
