Google to break 25 years of minimalism: here's the new homepage

The Google homepage, as you've known it for decades, is about to undergo a significant change. At an event in Madrid, the American giant confirmed the arrival of new features on its main page, with the ambition of making the search experience richer, more personalized, and more interactive. Discover, the news feed already present on mobile, and the widgets "At a glance" will appear on the desktop version of Google's search engine.

According to screenshots shared by SEO consultants present at the event, the new version retains the current design while adding two major blocks: the first dedicated to Discover, Google's personalized news feed, and the second to "At a Glance" widgets. These include the weather, sports results, reminders from Google Calendar, as well as a "frequently visited sites" section. One change aims to "Extend the surfaces" of Discover's display while making the experience "more relevant and responsive." The company seems to want to bring the desktop experience closer to the one long offered on Android.

Towards more personalization

Google isn't just adding content: it's also pushing personalization further. One of the elements highlighted during the presentation is the ability to follow topics, to display more relevant information. We're talking here about the page that precedes the search results, which have also started to change with "AI Overviews."

This update recalls several tests conducted by Google in recent years. In 2023, a prototype of Discover on the home page was briefly deployed. In 2022, a different design was also tested. This time, the company seems ready to take the plunge, although no launch date has been specified. Now it remains to be seen It remains unclear whether the integration will be enforced or whether it can be disabled to avoid disrupting users.
