It's official, Google will deploy Gemini in cars, on smartwatches, as well as on headphones and earphones in 2025.
Gemini has invited on our Android smartphones and various Google services for a while now, but is still missing from certain device categories. Commenting on parent company Alphabet's financial results for the first quarter of 2025 (which exceeded expectations), Sundar Pichai, CEO of the group, revealed that the situation will evolve quickly.
“We are upgrading Google Assistant to Gemini on mobile devices, and later this year we will upgrade tablets, cars, and devices that connect to your phone, such as headphones and watches”, the Google boss said. In short, at Nearly all devices that currently have Google Assistant will be upgrading to Gemini in the coming months.
Gemini is coming to our cars, watches, and headphones
From the start, Gemini impressed with its generative AI capabilities, but was still behind Google Assistant in controlling connected objects or establishing routines. Little by little, it has integrated all these features to come back to roughly the level of Google Assistant in terms of home automation, while being much more relevant than it in everything related to searching for information or establishing a reflection. Gemini is also more efficient at understanding and expressing oneself in natural language.
Users will have no choice in the matter and will eventually have to abandon Google Assistant and switch to Gemini, the former of which is soon to be unplugged. The transition will require a little adaptation time, but is necessary so that the company can focus its development efforts on one product rather than two.
Sundar Pichai is pleased with the successful integration of Gemini into the Android and Pixel ecosystems. Search features such as Circle to Search, Gemini Live's screen and camera sharing options, and photo and video editing tools have been well-received by users.
