Since the end of March, Google has ended security support for Android 12 and Android 12L, the version of the operating system adapted to large screens (tablets, foldable devices, or Chromebooks). The search engine has not officially confirmed this, but Android Authority has called on its sources. The monthly security bulletin for April does not contain any fixes for Android 12 and 12L. The last bulletin, which included updates The last update was in March.
Android 12, a version now vulnerable
This means that a device running this operating system will no longer receive Android-related security patches. However, Google apps will continue to benefit from them on an individual basis, as will modules from the Mainline project, an initiative that allows certain key Android components to be updated via the Play Store. which reduces exposure to vulnerabilities, but still, a smartphone running Android 12 is now less secure.
Things are different, however, if the smartphone manufacturer has committed to providing security updates, but must integrate them themselves (this is a "manual backport" operation). Large companies like Huawei or Samsung, with their overlays, can thus offer longer-term software support.
Google simply recommends upgrading to a more recent version of Android when possible. If not, why not use the device as a portable music player or home automation remote control! But it's best to avoid using it as your main smartphone.
Since the Pixel 8 in 2023, Google has committed to providing 7 years of Android and security updates. This long-term support is welcome and has been followed by other manufacturers like Samsung.
