Harry Potter: 4 Things About Cedric Diggory Only Book Fans Know

Before being revealed to the general public and the hearts of teenage girls for his performance in Twilight, Robert Pattinson was chosen in 2005 to play Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Loyal, fair, and courageous, he perfectly embodies the values of Hufflepuff House. Brilliant, he participates in the Triwizard Tournament and comes to the aid of Harry, whom he respects and considers more as an ally than a rival. Although his plot is quite short and is limited to the single film (since he perishes at the hands of Voldemort's wand), the books tell us more about him and his exploits in the saga.

#4 He already appeared in The Prisoner of Azkaban

Some people may remember the match between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff at the beginning of the film The Prisoner of Azkaban. A game during which Harry and the Seeker of the team with the Badger emblem engage in an intense duel to snatch the golden snitch, high in the sky above Hogwarts. Both opponents ultimately fail. The first falls off his broomstick due to a Dementor attack, while the second is struck by lightning. Although the Hufflepuff Seeker is not mentioned in the film, it could be Cedric (according to canon). In the book, he manages to catch the Snitch after Harry's fall, which he didn't notice. A good sport, he asks to replay the match, but without success.

#3 His fight against the dragon in the Triwizard Tournament

For reasons of format, the feature film The Goblet of Fire only focuses on Harry's ordeal against the Hungarian Horntail, the most dangerous of all dragons. Undoubtedly the most beautiful sequence in the film, in which the young wizard tries to escape the predator on the back of a broomstick on the rooftops of Hogwarts. The fights of the other three participants, namely Fleur Delacour, Viktor Krum, and Cedric Diggory, are not captured by Mike Newell's camera. But the book focuses on these confrontations. In Cedric's case, he faces a Swedish Short-snouted Dragon, known as the fastest flying dragon. Faced with the ferocious beast's slim chances of success, he attempts a transfiguration spell by transforming a stone into a Labrador to distract attention. Unfortunately, the spell doesn't fully work, and the dragon attacks him, burning him. Cedric manages to extinguish the flames and grab the egg.

#2 His Troubles in the Maze

During the third and final event of the Triwizard Tournament, Cedric and Harry enter the maze together, tied for first place with 85 points. But the film quickly cuts to the chase. We see Harry fighting vines and confronting a visibly bewitched Viktor Krum, before grabbing the Portkey at the same time as Cedric. The book goes into much more detail about the scene with riddles, magical creatures swarming around, trapped spells, and Viktor Krum bewitched by Barty Crouch Jr.. Cedric notably faces a Firecracker Scroutt placed by Hagrid as well as an Acromantula. He also faces a riddle posed by a Sphinx. He is especially saved twice by Harry, against hedges, then just in time before Krum casts the Cruciatus Curse on him.

#1 (Bonus) The timeline disrupted in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

An anecdote that serves as a wink to those who have read the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which, as a reminder, follows the adventures of Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy, the sons of Harry and Draco, as they enter Hogwarts, 19 years after the events of the last novel. During the play, they find a Time Turner and then attempt to prevent Cedric's death. Thinking they are doing a good deed, they then completely alter the course of history, which takes a dramatic turn. The two young wizards prevent Cedric from participating in the tournament and publicly humiliate him, which profoundly changes his personality. Wounded in his pride, Cedric then joins the Death Eaters and sides with Voldemort. The consequences are terrible. He kills Neville Longbottom, allowing Nagini to survive. From then on, Voldemort cannot be killed (since Nagini is a Horcrux), and even wins the war. In this version, Harry dies and the wizarding world plunges into darkness. This version has been particularly criticized by Potterheads and Cedric Diggory fans, who consider it very implausible compared to the personality and nature of their protégé, who would never have fallen to evil despite the humiliation.
