Nintendo Switch 2: Everything we know to date (info, ads, release date, first games, etc.)

Nintendo Switch 2: Everything we know to date (info, ads, release date, first games, etc.)

On March 3, 2025, the Nintendo Switch will celebrate its eighth anniversary. It was on March 3, 2017, that Nintendo released its latest console, which aimed to succeed the Wii U and the famous Nintendo 3DS. For the first time in its history, the Japanese company abandoned portable and home consoles to offer a single, hybrid machine that allows you to play anywhere you want.

The concept of the Switch immediately appealed to millions of players. After the huge commercial failure of the Wii U (sold only 13.5 million units worldwide), Nintendo returned to the top with a Switch that broke all records. Eight years later, this machine now peaks at 146 million units sold and remains the third best-selling video game console behind the 160 million PS2 and the 154 million Nintendo DS.

After two versions with the Switch Lite in 2019, a portable-only version, impossible to connect to a TV. Then the Switch OLED in 2021, allowing for a larger screen and much better resolution thanks to the OLED screen. Many rumors mentioned the arrival of a 4K Switch.

From 2022, the first rumors began to mention a Switch 2. Finally, we will have to wait until May 2024 for Nintendo to officially speak out and confirm the development of a new video game console that will be presented during the 2025 fiscal year, that is, before March 31, 2025.

In November 2024, Nintendo confirmed once again that the plans had not changed and that their next console would indeed be presented before March 31, 2025. In the same period, the Japanese firm confirmed that the next machine would be fully backward compatible with the games of the first Switch, whether physical games with cartridges or digital games purchased on the Nintendo eShop.

A powerful console?

Most recent update

Update – April 3, 2025:

For the moment, we do not yet have all the technical information about the console. Nintendo has confirmed the possibility of having 4K in TV mode, without specifying whether it is 4K upscale or 4K Native. We know that the new Dock is equipped with a ventilation system to improve the machine's performance.

The console will nevertheless be able to run games in 60FPS and even up to 120FPS.

Update – March 24, 2025:

According to information from insider Secretboy of the Famiiboards forum on the Gaming Leaks and Rumors subreddit, the Switch 2 would indeed offer an LCD screen, abandoning OLED again, with nevertheless, a 120 Hz panel, compatible with VRR and HDR. Thanks to this, we would be entitled to a very beautiful rendering, allowing to play games in 40 FPS on the next Nintendo console.

On this point, Nintendo has not addressed the subject for the moment. The latest rumors do not all go in the same direction. Some leak accounts claim that the console could be much more powerful than previously thought, allowing 4K gaming in TV mode and 1080p in handheld mode.

For his part, journalist Tom Warren (from The Verge) announces a console barely more powerful than a 2016 PS4 Pro. But this is contradicted by John Linneman, member and expert at Digital Foundry, who points out that the Switch2 should be more powerful than a PS4 Pro, notably thanks to the new, much more modern NVIDIA architecture. On the other hand, Linneman specifies that on the "portable" part, the Switch2 would still face some difficulties, forcing it to make concessions.

Is the Switch 2 backward compatible?

Most recent update

Update – April 3, 2025:

Yes, it had already been confirmed for several months that the Switch 2 would be backward compatible, but in addition to that, we learned today that the console will allow certain games to be updated (paid updates) to have access to an optimized version "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition" with better graphics, better resolution and, for certain games, additional content.

Update – March 28, 2025:

In a page on On its official website, Nintendo has provided details on its new digital game “sharing” system. On this page, the Japanese manufacturer stated: “Games exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games can only be played on a Nintendo Switch 2 console.” This statement therefore seems to imply that on the next console, we should have exclusive Switch 2 games and Switch games, optimized and improved for the Switch 2 (port genres) as is the case on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

On this point, Nintendo has already confirmed the full backward compatibility of its next console (which is not yet officially called Nintendo Switch2). It was during its quarterly report in November 2024 that the Japanese firm confirmed that all physical (cartridge) and digital (purchased on the Nintendo eShop) games will be backward compatible with Nintendo's next console.

Abandoning the OLED screen?

Most recent update

Update – April 3, 2025:

Yes, it's confirmed, with the Switch 2, Nintendo is abandoning the incredible OLED screen of the Switch OLED (2021) to return to an LCD screen. There's no doubt that an OLED Switch 2 will arrive later.

According to the latest rumors, the Nintendo Switch 2 will feature a much larger screen than the first Switch or the OLED model. However, to keep manufacturing costs as low as possible, Nintendo has reportedly chosen to abandon the OLED screen and return to an LCD panel. This information is however not official at the moment.

A design similar to the first Switch?

Nintendo Switch 2: Everything we know to date (info, ads, release date, first games, etc.)

According to the first leaks from various retailers who have already received accessories, the Nintendo Switch 2 would be very similar to the 2017 Switch. It would offer a slightly more rounded shape, a larger screen, new joy-cons that would correct the joy-con drift issues and that would this time be magnetized to the console. Vibrations would also be improved on the new joy-cons. This Switch 2 would have a new "C" button under the "Home" button, the purpose of which has not yet been revealed. For its launch, the console will be available in white or gray.

What launch games will the Switch 2 have?

Update – February 5, 2025:

According to insider eXtas1s, who has been quite prominent lately (notably by being the first to announce the arrival of Forza Horizon 5 on PS5, starting in November 2024), confirmed a few days ago that Forza Horizon 5 should also be arriving on Switch 2 soon. It is not yet known if the game will be planned for Day

Update – January 28, 2025:

According to a retailer, several unannounced games are planned for the Switch 2 in 2025. The retailer confirms the arrival of a new Mario Kart game, as well as a new 3D Mario. But in addition to this, the retailer mentions the arrival of a remaster/remake of an old game from The Legend of Zelda license. A choice that would not be surprising on the part of Nintendo. Each console that has had the right to a new Zelda has been crowned with success. With the recent release of Tears of the Kingdom, it is certain that a new opus will not be able to see the light of day anytime soon. Thus, the arrival of a remaster/remake of an acclaimed opus would be ideal. To be continued!

Update – January 22, 2025:

According to insider eXtas1s, in his latest YouTube video, Microsoft is expected to port many of its first-party games to the Switch 2, starting in 2025, as will be the case on the PS5. • Halo Master Chief Collection

  • Diablo IV
  • Fallout 4
  • Starfield
  • New Call of Duty game

Other rumors, notably from several Nintendo insiders, confirm that games like Tekken 8 and Red Dead Redemption II would also be planned for release on Switch 2 during the console's launch period.

Original article – January 3, 2025:

Still according to rumors, Nintendo has not yet officially communicated, four big launch games are expected for the console's release (or the first weeks of marketing):

  • Mario Kart 9 would be available upon the console's release with a Switch 2 + Mario Kart 9 pack
  • Metroid Prime 4, from launch or in the first weeks
  • Pokémon Legends Z-A, from launch or in the first weeks
  • A new Mario 3D, from launch or in the first weeks

What is the price of the Nintendo Switch 2?

Most recent update

Update – April 3, 2025

This is the news that hurts, really hurts. The Nintendo Switch 2 will be priced at €469.99, as a standalone version. The bundled version with Mario Kart World will cost €509.99. The SD cards from the first Switch (Standard, Lite, OLED), which expand the console's capacity, will not be compatible, and you'll have to pay again.

But the worst part is the price of the games. Digital games will be sold, on average, at €69.99 on Switch 2. While physical games will be sold, on average, €10 more, at €79.99. But some big games, like Mario Kart World, will be priced much higher. Indeed, the next Mario Kart will be priced at 89.99 euros in its standard physical version. And at 79.99 euros in its digital version. Yes, that stings.

Update – February 20, 2025

After rumors from insiders and journalists, before the Switch 2's announcement, it's now analysts' turn to make their predictions. According to Joost van Dreunen, the Nintendo Switch 2 should be priced at $399 at launch. Apparently, everyone agrees on a price between €350 and €400. This would allow the Switch 2 to stay below the price of most portable machines to gain a serious advantage, especially with its backward compatibility.

Update – January 17, 2025

According to numerous rumors, following the release of the first video of the Switch 2, the console should be sold at a price of 399.99 euros.

Original article – January 3, 2025:

For the moment, still no official communication from Nintendo regarding the price of this new console. Still no price announced either from reliable sources, journalists and insiders. Some unfounded rumors have suggested a price of 400 euros for this new Nintendo console, but again, nothing official.

A “Mouse” feature for the Switch 2?

Most recent update

Update – April 3, 2025

Yes, this feature was confirmed during the presentation. This new way of playing will allow you to play games in a new way. For some games, it will allow you to have gameplay on PC. And finally, this mouse functionality will also be able to adapt to certain mini games on some titles like Super Mario Party Jamboree.

Update – January 16, 2025

Nintendo Switch 2: Everything we know to date (info, ads, release date, first games, etc.)

In the presentation video, which was published a few minutes ago by Nintendo, it is possible to have a rather intriguing sequence at the beginning of the presentation. Before focusing on the console, Nintendo begins by presenting the new Joy-Cons. We should immediately note the Easter egg and the self-mockery of the Joy-Con drift drama with a rather funny video sequence showing the Joy-Cons drifting like cars.

Then, we can see that the appearance of the new controllers, especially with the protective strap on the back, resembles mice. And, with this strange support and the way of moving the Joy-Cons, we have the impression of seeing computer mice. Could this be one of the new features of the Switch2 Joy-Cons? A mouse function allowing you to navigate in-game?
