Nostalgic for Chromecast? Here's its spiritual successor

Since the discontinuation of Chromecast with Google TV, streaming enthusiasts have been waiting for a simple and affordable alternative. While Google has chosen to orient its new offering towards a more premium box with its Google TV Steamer, Thomson is reviving the spirit of the HDMI dongle with the Cast 150.

The Cast 150 from Thomson, a new Google TV dongle to replace the Chromecast

Thomson unveils the Cast 150, a solution that takes the DNA of the Chromecast with Google TV, which has disappeared from the shelves. The device plugs directly into any HDMI port and offers 4K streaming, which is quite common these days, even on affordable devices.

On the technical side, the Cast 150 is based on a quad-core Cortex A35 processor, coupled with an ARM Mali-G31 GPU, all supported by 2 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage. These are decent specifications for this type of device, especially since it supports Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision standards, which is always a plus if you have the right equipment.

A remote control with a Live TV button

The main difference with this Cast 150 is its new remote control, aligned with Google's latest recommendations. It includes a "Live TV" button in the center, to facilitate access to live programs. This new feature, which Google recently announced for its future products, is therefore starting to become widespread.

In addition to this new button, the remote control retains the classic shortcuts to Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, and Disney Plus. For now, Thomson is keeping the price of this Cast 150 secret. But by focusing on a price list similar to that of the original Chromecast, the manufacturer could well attract an audience looking for a simple and effective solution, without spending a fortune.
