It took Google over a year to finally offer a PDF reader worthy of the name to the mobile version of Google Chrome. The feature, tested since February 2024, was already available in the browser, but disabled by default. To take advantage of it, you had to enable the dedicated flag within the browser's experimental features. It now seems that it has reached maturity and that its stability is good enough: Google has just rolled it out on Android.
Open and annotate PDFs directly in Chrome
For a long time, opening a PDF file in Chrome on Android was a real pain. The browser had to download the file first, before it could be opened in an external reader. But this old-fashioned operation is now a thing of the past. : Chrome can now open PDF files natively and, good news, also allows you to interact with them.
Google had the good idea to integrate several annotation tools into its web browser's PDF reader, accessible by pressing the pencil button. Within this annotation toolbar, you will find a module for highlighting text as well as a pencil, with, for each of them, the possibility of adjusting the thickness and color of the highlighting or the line. Google has also grafted an eraser, to remove annotations made by mistake, as well as back/forward buttons to undo or redo an annotation item.
Finally, the button with an eye allows you to temporarily disable the annotation modules to allow you to scroll through the document before annotating it a little further.
Finally, it is possible to use the search function in a page integrated into Chrome to search directly for content within a PDF document. The PDF reader and its annotation tools are available now in the latest browser update, stamped 135.0.7049.111.
