Orange puts another nail in the coffin of the TV decoder

Orange puts another nail in the coffin of the TV decoder

This is a change that looks like a small revolution for Orange. The historic operator announced a few days ago that it is now possible to download the Orange TV application on a connected TV or a streaming box, without having to install the TV decoder alongside it - or even go through the Wi-Fi network of a Livebox.

No longer do you need a decoder or Livebox to access Orange TV

The announcement went somewhat unnoticed since it was made in the wake of the presentation of the Livebox S and Livebox 7. However, it remains no less important because from now on, it is possible to enjoy Orange TV services on all the television sets in the house, without any worries. Furthermore, and this is not insignificant, the operator has removed the 5 euro option previously required to access the platform. It is now included in the packages.

So be careful, this does not mean that access to Orange TV has become free! You still have to show your credentials when launching the app, that is, enter the login information for your Orange subscriber account. The identifier can even be recognized automatically (sometimes), which makes life easier for the subscriber who will only have to enter their password.

Orange is following in the footsteps of Free, which has already "liberated" its OQEE online TV service from any physical connection. And this is a very clear trend in the market. TV decoders from operators are not lightning fast, generally these boxes are not very powerful and the user experience is not great. A dedicated application at least has the merit of using the capabilities of the TV or connected box.

Orange TV allows access to more than 200 live channels, replay programs and start over (to resume a live program from the beginning or to pause the live program), to access the video on demand catalog which contains more than 30,000 films, or to use the TV Recorder to record programs on all its screens. And it is possible to subscribe to additional services like Netflix or Canal+.

The application is compatible with connected TVs running Android TV (version 9 and higher), Samsung (2019 models and newer), as well as Apple TV running tvOS 15 or better.
