After the success of Prey, Dan Trachtenberg's next films in the Predator universe were highly anticipated. The wait ended this April with the first images of Predator: Killer of Killers, and especially those of Predator: Badlands, which was released yesterday in a trailer. On November 5, it will therefore be possible to finally see a Predator in theaters, but not only that. Indeed, the trailer reveals an unexpected connection with another cult science fiction franchise.
Predator Badlands: A Bestial Trailer
While Prey took place in 1719, during the first visit of a Predator to Earth, Predator: Badlands projects us into the future, among the stars. The action takes place on an isolated planet where a Predator rejected by his own kind will join forces with a young woman named Thia to hunt down the ultimate adversary. We're a long way from the plot of Prey, and the trailer for the next film clearly shows it.
Predator: Badlands partly takes up the framework of Predators, notably in the possibilities it can offer us. As in the 2010 film, we find ourselves on a planet populated by new species. The trailer for Dan Trachtenberg's feature film gives a glimpse of a particularly rich bestiary, much more so than before. We're almost getting closer to a Monster Hunter with this Predator determined to hunt powerful creatures. In fact, one of them, seen in the trailer, is as imposing as some from the games. It remains to be seen what role Thia and the humans we see will play. Well, the trailer already provides some answers, as the character played by Elle Fanning makes the connection with the Alien saga. Predator and Alien once again share the same universe. The trailer for Predator: Badlands has made many Alien fans wide-eyed. At one point, we see Thia imprisoned, her eyes turning white, or almost. In these, we can see the Weyland-Yutani logo, revealing that the young woman is actually an android, that she probably doesn't have good intentions, and that the film is part of the Alien universe, or even a continuation of a particular film. Indeed, the audience is familiar with these white eyes, because that's exactly what happens to Andy in Alien: Romulus when he is reset. Are Fede Alvarez's film and Dan Trachtenberg's film linked? We don't know yet, but what is certain is that we have never been so close to an Alien vs Predator 3.
Alien and Predator are two almost inseparable licenses. Unfortunately, it has often been for the worse with two rather bad Alien vs Predators that have tarnished the image of both franchises. However, with Alien: Romulus and Prey which have relaunched brilliantly the sagas, we can now hope for a more successful reunion. To do this, we just need to respect the lore of each universe, which, until now, has never happened... at least in the cinema.
