It is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish a real voice from a synthetic voice generated by AI, as those who have been able to try ChatGPT's "voices" can attest. But the least we can do is not to take people by surprise and give away our true colors! However, the Australian group ARN Media has "forgotten" to specify that one of its "voices" was entirely made with AI.
A real fake voice on the airwaves
Thy, host of the lunchtime slot on CADA radio (a station that broadcasts in Sydney), switches dishes between two pop and hip-hop tracks, to the delight of the approximately 72,000 daily listeners of her show, "Workdays with Thy". Broadcast for several months, it hasn't made a splash until until the whole thing was uncovered by the publication Financial Review: Thy is a synthesized voice, generated by AI, without the listeners having been informed all this time.
«We're trying to understand what's real and what's not,» explained Ciaran Davis, managing director of ARN Media, the owner of CADA. "What we learned is the power of the presenters we have," he continues. Thy's voice is based on that of a group employee who works in accounting. The voice clone was developed by ElevenLabs, an audio AI platform that transforms text into audio.
Thy will continue his "career" on the station, however, the executive assures that AI presenters "certainly do not represent the future." This Australian example is not unique. Late last year, a Polish station fired all of its journalists and replaced them with AI "voices." A week later, management came to its senses after causing quite a stir. ramdam with listeners.
