Traditionally considered the best of the three Star Wars prequels, Revenge of the Sith celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. For the occasion, Disney and Lucas Film have decided to re-release Episode 3 of the cult saga in theaters, as they regularly do with all their works. But this time, Revenge of the Sith is preparing to break all records.
Star Wars in the spotlight with the re-release of Revenge of the Sith
Do you feel like discovering or rediscovering the adventures of Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Padmé? Or witnessing Anakin Skywalker's definitive entry into the dark side of the Force? That's good news, Revenge of the Sith is being re-released this weekend in the United States and around the world to celebrate its 20th anniversary. This re-release, which almost coincides with the recent Star Wars Celebration in Japan and the release of season 2 of Andor on Disney+, is generating a lot of buzz. Indeed, Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith has already generated $11.3 million in the United States on its first day back in theaters, Friday, April 25, 2025. According to Deadline, it is just behind Sinners, the new film from Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan ($13 million) and The Accountant 2 ($9.4 million). The film even ranks ahead of the phenomenon Minecraft ($5.1 million) and Until Dawn ($3.2 million).
Record in sight for Star Wars Episode III
According to estimates, the third installment of the prequel series could earn between 25 and 30 million dollars over the entire weekend in the United States alone. A score higher than $30.2 million would even put Revenge of the Sith at the top of Disney's box office re-releases, ahead of The Lion King. In 2011, the animated classic grossed over $185 million worldwide. Currently, the absolute record for the biggest re-release belongs to Titanic, which grossed $350 million worldwide in 2012, 15 years after its initial release. In terms of the franchise, Revenge of the Sith could beat The Phantom Menace, which grossed $22 million in the United States during its first re-release in 2012. Adjusted for inflation, this is equivalent to approximately $28 million today.
A billion dollars in sight for Revenge of the Sith?
With this re-release, Revenge of the Sith should easily cross the $400 million mark in total domestic revenue this weekend. Since its release in 2005, the film has grossed over $850 million worldwide. However—and without taking inflation into account—it seems a bit hasty to say that it will soon reach a billion dollars. Is this reassuring for Disney, given that the latest series have not been convincing, nor has the postlogy? Nothing could be less certain. In any case, LucasFilm has just confirmed that a good ten films and series centered on the Star Wars universe are currently in development.
