Superman has always embodied justice, strength, and righteousness. Sometimes, we even forget that the superman is also a great romantic. Among his adventures, there is one that is particularly embarrassing. In fact, the great DC superhero once almost fell into an incestuous relationship.
A True Story
The story was indeed published in the issue Action Comics #289, in June 1962. It all starts when Supergirl cries over a romantic movie where the hero loses the woman he loved because he waited too long to propose.
Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, then worries about her cousin. What if Superman ends up alone too? He still hasn't chosen between Lois Lane and Lana Lang. So she sets out to find him the perfect soulmate.
Her cousin will try to set him up with Helen of Troy
Determined, Supergirl then travels back in time thanks to the time barrier of the Fortress of Solitude. In order to find the most beautiful woman of all time, she decides to go to meeting Helen of Troy, who is reputed to be such.
She then convinces Superman to come meet her. But the date doesn't go as planned. Jealous warriors, as well as a minotaur and a unicorn, attack Superman. Supergirl manages to save the day, but she steals the spotlight from Superman. Hélène is then furious and chases them both away.
Kara perseveres and then takes him to the 31st century. She wants him to fall under the spell of Saturn Girl, a member of the Legionnaires of the Future. This time, Kara manages to create the right atmosphere. The two even share kisses, but Lightning Lad, Saturn Girl's husband, surprises them. In great discomfort. Supergirl and Superman quickly escape.
What if the solution was Kara herself?
Back in the present, Supergirl finally admits to Superman that she wanted to help him find love because she was afraid he would end up alone like the hero of the film. He then explains to her that he may never get married. His duty to Earth comes first.
But he adds that if he were to marry anyone, it would be her, Kara. Does this confession mean he would have done it if Kryptonian laws forbid marriages between cousins?
An even more bizarre last attempt
Besides, Kara refuses to give up. She then searches for an alternate version of herself, but one who isn't her cousin, and who is an adult. She uses a supercomputer to scan the universe and ends up finding Luma Lynai, a Supergirl from another world.
Superman meets her and it's love at first sight! He wants to marry her immediately. But as soon as Luma arrives on Earth, she falls ill. The yellow sun of our planet is toxic to her, unlike the orange sun of her world, which gives her her powers.
Tragically, the two part in tears. Once again, Superman leaves single. Supergirl, on the other hand, finally agrees to let him manage his love life alone.
