eSIMs simplify smartphone use, but complicate procedures in the event of loss. Google is preparing to solve this problem with a new feature. An expected improvement that could give Android an advantage over... Apple.
For several years now, physical SIM cards have gradually given way to eSIMs, fully digital versions. Today, it is even possible to transform your classic card in a few minutes on most smartphones. The advantages are numerous: it becomes easier to manage multiple lines, change operators or activate a new connection without having to travel. This solution also avoids having to handle fragile cards or carry several SIM cards abroad.
But not everything is perfect. In the event of loss or breakage of the phone, recovering an eSIM is much more complicated than a physical card. You often have to go through your carrier to reactivate your line, a process that can be time-consuming and frustrating. Until now, Android didn't offer a simple solution for backing up this sensitive data. This is precisely what Google is preparing to change in an upcoming update.
Google is working on eSIM backup via Google One to simplify the restoration of Android phones
Thanks to A preview discovered in the latest beta of Google Play Services (version 25.16.33) by our colleagues at Android Authority, it appears that Google is preparing the possibility of including eSIMs in Google One backups. Concretely, when changing phones or after an incident, it would be possible to restore them directly from the cloud, as we already do for our messages, applications and contacts. This would avoid lengthy procedures with operators and would greatly facilitate the transition from one device to another.
For now, this function is not yet available to users, but its development seems well advanced. Better still, even Apple does not currently offer a similar solution on iOS, which could offer a definite advantage to Android users. Google also plans to revise the backup interface of its devices to integrate this new feature. If all goes according to plan, switching phones could become much easier, even for those who use multiple eSIMs on the same device.
