Since April 14, subscribers to the Max platform can discover season 2 of The Last of Us. The two-year break necessary for the release of this second batch of episodes was a blessing, because the quality of the series has just increased a notch. It even corrects one of the main (the only?) flaws of season 1 by adding just one thing: action scenes.
While its faithful adaptation has been Hailed from the very first episodes, season 1 of The Last of Us still skipped a huge portion of the video game to make the production more digestible on screen. The infected were no longer the focus of the work, and moved to the second, or even the third, plane of the overall plot. This is a point that was criticized both by players, but also by spectators who expected more action.
Already more action in 2 episodes than in 9 of the last season
Good news, the first two episodes of season 2 are enough to show us that the creators of the series listened to the feedback and made the necessary changes to grab our attention again. In episode 1, the prowlers were presented in a sequence of palpable tension, in the heart of a supermarket haunted by the presence of an infected more intelligent than the others.
The trend continues in episode 2 when Ellie, Dina, Jesse and Joel go out to patrol in the blizzard. We learn that the infected use the bodies of their own kind to set traps for the patrollers, and that they know how to organize themselves collectively to take down the same enemy. This dynamic is completely new within the series and the action scenes that go with it are impressive.
When watching, we find the HBO touch that we discovered with Game of Thrones and its grandiose battles. The attack of the infected from the mountain to Jackson is carried out with a care that we had not even found in both seasons of House of the Dragon. The time allocated to this action is considerable over the hour of the episode and it has all the right elements of a successful battle.
Tension, strategy, explosions and high stakes for the main characters. We can only hope that this change for the better will continue to operate in the following chapters, because it allows to raise the level of the adaptation once again and surprise us even after having finished the game three times.
