Tomb Raider: Very bad news that will disappoint all fans

As we know, Amazon Prime always has many projects in the pipeline and a rather ambitious catalog. The releases scheduled for April 2025 are further proof of this. Among the projects in progress, there was notably the production and development of a series dedicated to Tomb Raider... Unfortunately, bad news has just arrived.

Tomb Raider has bad news for its fans

This is news that may disappoint Lara Croft fans. After months of rumors and radio silence, the Tomb Raider series produced by Amazon seems to have been shelved. A very ambitious project, however... but one that never really went beyond the promise stage.

Announced with great fanfare several years ago, this Tomb Raider series was supposed to mark a turning point for the franchise. At the helm: Phoebe Waller-Bridge, famous creator of Fleabag, recruited by Amazon with a golden contract. But despite the hopes, the development of the project quickly turned into a nightmare. The scripts took an insane amount of time to be written. And when they were presented, they reportedly didn't convince the Amazon teams. Result: no filming has begun. And actress Sophie Turner, once tipped to play Lara Croft, is now busy with other films.

Another factor that clearly worked against the project: the recent departure of Jennifer Salke, the head of Amazon Studios. She was the one who bet big on Waller-Bridge in 2019 for Tomb Raider, offering her an exclusive contract worth $20 million per year. A risky bet that, today, looks like a resounding failure. Since the signing of this agreement, no content has seen the light of day. The Tomb Raider series was supposed to be the flagship project that would change everything. But with this change of direction at Amazon, priorities seem to have shifted.

A new disappointment for Lara Croft

This is a blow to the Tomb Raider franchise, which could have used this series to attract a new audience. Especially at a time when Video game adaptations are becoming increasingly popular on streaming platforms. For now, neither Amazon nor Phoebe Waller-Bridge have officially confirmed the project's cancellation. But the clues are piling up. No filming schedule. No new casting. And above all, no positive signals from the teams. Suffice it to say, the future of this series seems more than compromised.
