WhatsApp is developing a new feature to better protect content shared in statuses. The app will soon be able to detect screenshots. A measure directly inspired by Snapchat.
WhatsApp is constantly evolving. In recent weeks, two new features have made an impression on users. First, the appearance of a mysterious blue circle in the contact list, which turned out to be Meta AI, Facebook's intelligent assistant. Then, a photo collage creation function, spotted in a test version of the application. This new feature would allow you to combine multiple images into a single status, like on Instagram. All these developments confirm that the app is trying to catch up with other messaging platforms, particularly in temporary visual content.
A new feature in preparation is added to this series of changes. In a test version of WhatsApp for Android (2.25.12.19), there are hints that the app may soon detect screenshots taken on status posts. This means that if someone takes a screenshot of something you've posted, the app could automatically spot it. It's not yet confirmed whether the author of the status will receive a notification, but the technology is already partly integrated into the code.
WhatsApp wants to prevent screenshots of statuses or alert users
This feature clearly recalls that of Snapchat, which has long notified users when a capture is taken. WhatsApp could therefore choose to follow the same path, or opt for an outright blocking of captures, as is already the case for profile photos. This measure would strengthen the protection of ephemeral content, often used to share personal information, private images or everyday moments.
This strengthening of confidentiality is part of a broader strategy. WhatsApp is seeking to modernize its statuses and offer more control to its users. The addition of photo collages, Meta AI, and soon screenshot detection show that the app wants to align with current standards. If this feature is enabled in a future update, it could change the way statuses are used and shared.
