Years after Samsung, the iPhone will finally get an optimized desktop display feature when connected to an external display. The update iOS 19 update should add this option.
Apple will present iOS 19 on June 9, 2025, at its traditional Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). But we already know a little about this update. iOS 19 is expected to bring a semblance of a desktop mode to the iPhone. This would allow access to a better-optimized interface than the basic one when connecting the phone to an external display. According to the source, only iPhones equipped with a USB-C port would support this feature. Older models with Lightning connectors should not be able to benefit from it.
The iPhone and iPad are increasingly becoming desktop tools
This is obviously reminiscent of the famous Samsung DeX mode, deployed on the manufacturer's high-end Galaxy devices for many years. DeX mode allows you to connect a compatible smartphone or tablet to a monitor (wired or wireless) in order to benefit from a larger display space while having an interface adapted to desktop use.
Until now, iPhones offered a mirror mode, which simply duplicates the mobile screen on the external display. But this function is very limited and impractical to use. Performance isn't up to scratch (there's some latency), mouse support isn't the most responsive, and the interface, designed for touch, isn't efficient.
MajinBu adds that, along the same lines, iPadOS 19 will also improve the desktop experience on iPads for users who use the Magic Keyboard. When the keyboard is connected, the interface will adapt and display the menu bar at the top, just like on macOS. Apple seems to want to standardize its ecosystem. Another new feature, iPadOS 19 would bring Stage Manager 2.0, an improvement to multitasking mode that would make managing applications and windows smoother and more convenient, for better productivity.
