Since the announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2, gamers have been deeply concerned about the future of video games. Prices are rising, and it's unclear whether wallets can keep up. However, some studios have chosen to offer exceptionally low prices for their new releases, and this is particularly the case for a legendary franchise.
Split Fiction and Clair Obscur Expedition 33 resist price increases
2025 is the year of price increases, but also, paradoxically, of price decreases. Split Fiction opened the ball rolling with a price of €49.99, especially since a single purchase is enough to play cooperatively. Hazelight Studios' game remains "modest" compared to AAA titles, which justifies this price. Despite this, it was highly anticipated. As proof, the game reached $4 million in sales. This shows that a low price attracts, especially when the quality is there.
Speaking of quality, it's impossible not to mention Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Sandfall Studio's game is the phenomenon of the beginning of the year. Offered at €49.99, this title is extremely generous in content and slaps some AAA titles in the face. It shook up the industry, proving that with heart, it was possible to work miracles, and at a reduced price, too. This exceptional price, for two huge successes, could well inspire some studios to follow suit. This is already the case for 2K Games, which plans to match this price for its next big release.
Mafia: The Old Country offered at a price you can't refuse
2025 will mark the return of the Mafia license with Mafia: Old Country, a game set in Sicily in the 1900s. After a controversial Mafia III, 2K Games and Hangar 13 intend to return to their roots, not only in terms of narrative, but also in terms of finance. During a presentation at PAX East 2025, the first gameplay trailer, the release date, and especially the price of the game were revealed. Players will be able to get their hands on the game on August 8, 2025, at a price of €49.99 for the standard edition and €59.99 for the deluxe edition.
The price of each Mafia was in line with the standards of its time. For Mafia: The Old Country, there is a €30 drop. This can be explained by the fact that, unlike the previous installments, it will be a completely linear narrative game. However, aside from the third installment, no Mafia is truly open-world or particularly long. We're not going to complain about this price, even if it's funny to see it so low, especially since for GTA 6, 2K Games could well set a new price record.
