Apple is preparing a new software upgrade with iOS 19, expected in September, and this time the battery is in the spotlight. According to Bloomberg, the Apple brand wants to integrate a battery management mode driven by artificial intelligence, a new feature designed to extend the battery life of iPhones, particularly the upcoming iPhone 17.
A thinner battery, smarter AI
This new model, which would be much thinner than current versions, would be equipped with a smaller battery, which could limit its endurance. To compensate, Apple will use usage data collected on the devices to identify user habits and adjust consumption accordingly: apps put to sleep, functions on standby, occasional limitation of certain activities... everything will be orchestrated by AI.
An indicator on the lock screen will also display an estimated recharge time, a handy little addition for users in a hurry. The feature won't be exclusive to new devices: all iPhones compatible with iOS 19 will have access to it.
This feature joins the Apple Intelligence suite, the AI platform launched by Apple to compete with OpenAI, Google, and others. Launched with iOS 18, Apple Intelligence already allows you to edit text on the fly, create personalized emojis, or generate sketches. These features are fairly basic compared to what rivals can accomplish, and the manufacturer also missed the rollout: several tools were announced with great fanfare before being delayed, starting with the new Siri, which is still absent.
Beyond this AI battery management feature, Apple wants to go further in the interface, which will benefit from a visual refresh internally dubbed "Solarium." The inspiration is shared between iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Improvements are also planned for connectivity, including a function to automatically synchronize Wi-Fi credentials between devices, which will be useful in hotels, gyms, or offices.
The Californian company also seems to have taken into account the criticisms of previous versions, which were sometimes deemed unstable: this time, stability and reliability would be priorities, with engineers mobilized to avoid annoying bugs at launch. But that's easier said than done...
Apple plans to finalize the first beta version of iOS 19 by the end of May, for an official presentation on June 9 at the WWDC conference. As always, the rollout to the general public is planned for September, alongside the iPhone 17 and the new Apple Watch.
