A few months ago, the Nintendo Switch 2 was still just a hypothetical name surrounded by leaks. Now, we are only a few days away from the release of the new hybrid console. Highly anticipated by fans of the Big N, it is already shaping up to be a success, especially in Japan. But there is no doubt that it will also convince the international public. However, despite a hoped-for feature that has been confirmed, a small downside darkens the future of those who would have liked full backward compatibility.
Things are getting complicated for the Nintendo Switch 2
During the big presentation conference, the manufacturer finally confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 would benefit from a highly anticipated feature. Continuing with a mid-gen logic already applied in the era of the Game Boy Color, the 3DS and the Wii U, the new console will indeed be backwards compatible with the previous one.
However, this functionality will encounter some limitations, particularly at the console's launch. We'll have to make up our own minds: the manufacturer has tested more than 15,000 games, including first-party games, and a good number won't work quite as hoped. On the one hand, some games will simply not be accessible on June 5th, while others will encounter in-game problems. On the other hand, a slew of titles, including motion gaming in particular, will not be compatible with the new Joy-Con. We've listed everything for you.
They will not be available from the launch of the Switch 2
This is only a tiny proportion of the 15,000 games tested in total, but more than 130 games released on the first Switch will not be able to work on the Switch 2 at its release1, June 5, 2025. Among the lot, we regret seeing very good games see their access delayed, like Doom Eternal or Little Nightmares. Even more, we are surprised that Nintendo skips the launch of the very popular service games like Dead by Daylight and Fortnite. We will therefore have to wait until the manufacturer resolves the compatibility issues.

Which games will be incompatible on Nintendo Switch 2 ?
Big N is also working on other issues to resolve on around forty titles. These could well be launched at the release of the Nintendo Switch 2. However, they will likely encounter various bugs2. Among them are the very good Alan Wake Remastered and Alien Isolation. Another game-service from Epic Games is also on the list, namely Fall Guys. Regular players will not be able to fully enjoy the title on the new hybrid console right away.

Games that will require the old Joy-Con
Finally, Nintendo warns you that you will not be able to play with several people titles from the previous console's catalog with the Switch 2's Joy-Con 2. Therefore, you'll need to arm yourself with the old controllers and sync them with the new console. These are productions that directly exploit the technology embedded in the first Joy-Con, such as 1-2 Switch or even the new Dr. Kawashima. It's still unknown if the manufacturer will look into compatibility in the future. Still, you'll need to plan ahead for the following games:
- 1-2-Switch
- Everybody 1-2-Switch!
- Video Game Workshop
- Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 1 to 3
- Nintendo Switch Sports
- Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training
- Ring Fit Adventure
- WarioWare: Move It!
