Apple wants to make Siri a real rival to ChatGPT

At the end of 2022, ChatGPT made its first public appearance, marking the advent of generative AI. Apple did not immediately recognize the chatbot's potential, even though everyone in the industry was aware of the technological situation at the time. "It's not like what OpenAI was doing was a secret. Anyone paying attention to the market should have seen it and been interested in it immediately," according to a confession from an Apple executive interviewed by Bloomberg.

Apple didn't see the threat of bots

John Giannendra, Apple's (now disgraced) AI chief, reportedly said internally that AI agents were still many years away from replacing humans; He claimed that most consumers shared his distrust of generative AI. This is probably true… and false at the same time, given the success of ChatGPT and the ensuing frenzy.

The vice president maintained behind the scenes that bots did not represent an urgent threat, and he maintained that what users really wanted in an assistant was an “interface to control devices.” This would explain why Apple has not gone on the hunt for chatbots, unlike the industry. History has cruelly proven John Giannendra wrong.

While Apple entered the generative AI race very late, some executives are now reportedly pushing to transform Siri into a true rival to ChatGPT, in other words, to make the assistant a conversational chatbot capable of exploiting the "open web" to synthesize data from multiple sources.

According to employees, the Siri bot is currently in the testing phase, and has made significant progress over the past six months. Some even consider it to be on par with recent versions of ChatGPT! Now it remains to be offered to users, but it seems that there are still questions in Cupertino about the merits of such a launch.
