Apple's last major audio release was in September 2024 with the AirPods 4. If you're hesitating between buying these wireless earbuds or waiting for the next ones, the crucial question at times like these is knowing when the next release will be.
While the development of generative AI doesn't yet allow us to read into the future, we at least have the various leaks and indiscretions that allow us to get a first idea of the Cupertino giant's schedule.
Wait until 2026, or even 2027 for the Max
Analyst Ming Chi Kuo published a short message on X.com (formerly Twitter) in which he claims that the next "significant update" to the AirPods would not come before 2026. He adds that, in line with his "previous predictions", AirPods equipped with an infrared camera would not enter mass production until 2026.
Translation: the launch of the iPhone 17 should not be accompanied of a major audio product launch.
Let's continue with the second part of the post, which focuses on the AirPods Max. As a reminder, these are wireless active noise-cancelling headphones. This one hasn't seen any major updates since its launch in 2021, apart from the arrival of new colors and the USB-C port in September 2024.
Apple would apparently be satisfied with its product as well as its sales, since the Californian giant would not plan the launch of a new headset until 2027. It would be, still according to the analyst, a lighter version of the AirPods Max, which weighs 386g as a reminder. For comparison, the latest Sony WH-1000XM6, which we gave a rating of 5/5, weighs 254g.
