According to the generally well-informed journalist Mark Gurman, Apple will delay the release of its robotic device. It seems that the artificial intelligence Siri is to blame.
Apple wants to diversify. Alongside expected new products like an iPad Mini and an OLED MacBook Pro, as well as a foldable device, the brand with the bitten apple has been preparing an astonishing machine for several years. In August 2024, we learned what it was: a kind of iPad attached to an articulated arm capable of “chatting” with you using artificial intelligence. This mysterious Apple robot even has a supposed price, around $1,000.
Since then, we know a little more about its features. The device will be responsible for controlling the various connected objects in your home, from smart bulbs to security cameras, including your coffee maker. Its screen will also be used to launch video conferences. Capable of rotating 360° and moving up and down, the robot will interact with you according to an AI personality developed for the occasion. On paper, it sounds appealing, but don't expect to get your hands on it anytime soon.
Because of Siri, Apple's AI robot could be released later than expected
Apple isn't going to reinvent the wheel, as the robot will rely on Siri to respond to your requests. For example, you could say "look at me" to make the screen turn towards you. Except that the AI assistant is causing problems for Apple, according to information provided by Mark Gurman in his newsletter Power On. This would not concern the screen model with an articulated arm, codenamed J595, but its little brother internally called J490.
The latter would be a simple 6-inch screen, without an arm, including pre-installed Apple applications like the Safari browser or something to play music. Gurman does not say what the problems are, but they are significant enough to delay the release of J490. The journalist estimates that we will see it in stores at the end of 2025 at the earliest, or even early 2026. The model above would follow one or two years later. We will have to be patient.
