Baldur's Gate 3 Didn't Give Fans What They Wanted, Here's Why

Baldur's Gate 3 Didn't Give Fans What They Wanted, Here's Why

Baldur's Gate 3 now belongs entirely to players and modders. After the recent release of the huge Patch 8, Larian Studios is indeed satisfied with its work on the absolute GOTY 2023. We already knew that the studio had no plans to develop DLC or a fourth installment. In an interview with GameSpot, its CEO Swen Vincke offers a very simple explanation for this, which could strengthen the fans' sympathy for the cheerful Belgians, despite a little touch of disappointment.

Larian Studios' laudable position on Baldur's Gate 3 and DLC

When a studio or publisher has a huge critical and commercial success like Baldur's Gate 3 in 2023 (and even today), common practice is to capitalize as much as possible on a successful title to ensure a certain windfall of revenue via DLC or sequels. However, this was not the case for Larian Studios, after two years of support and eight updates. major updates adding a bunch of new features, all completely free.

Asked about this decision, which goes somewhat against industry standards, by GameSpot, Swen Vincke, CEO of Larian Studios, gave a response that was as naive as it was salutary for the good of its developers. " We thought for a while about being in the DLC business for Baldur's Gate 3, but the teams really weren't keen on it, even though we were often told that we were supposed to do it. We finally decided to do without it, because it seemed much more boring to us than creating something truly new. Even if having happy players means a happy business, for me, first and foremost, you need happy developers to have happy players.

This also echoes the arguments put forward by Swen Vincke in his speech at The Game Awards 2024 to award Astro Bot the GOTY title as the winner of the Game of the Year award for Baldur's Gate 3 the previous year. He then stated that, in his opinion, the next games of the year will be titles developed by passionate studios, who place their creation before financial gain, and that these will follow as long as a game is made with love and the desire to make it fun. Thus, Larian Studios is already working on the post-Baldur's Gate 3 and is currently working on two new games that are visibly "extremely ambitious." So we'll have to be very patient before we see the color, but we're definitely monitoring all of this very closely.
