Having remained relatively discreet since the failure of Battlefield 2042 in 2021, the Electronic Arts franchise is now quietly on the way back. In the shadows, no fewer than four studios (DICE, Criterion Games, Motive, and Ripple Effect) are currently joining forces to bring the next installment to life, which we'll call Battlefield 6 for now, and for which we're still waiting for a proper announcement. And while we wait for that to happen, one of the studios in question, Motive, is telling us a little more about what the single-player campaign has in store for us.
Battlefield 6's single-player is slowly being revealed
Because yes, the least we can say is that EA has learned its lesson. While Battlefield 2042 skipped single-player, Battlefield 6 will not. And to do things properly, the developers at Motive did not hesitate to draw inspiration from certain works that are close to their hearts. Roman Campos-Oriola, creative director, mentions the Special Operations: Lioness series, for example, while executive producer Philippe Ducharme mentions Alex Garland's film Civil War. "Given some of the things we're highlighting [in this game], the film is actually a good reference," he assures. This interview, conducted by the media outlet Inverse, is also a good way to get a first idea of what to expect from the writing of this future Battlefield, particularly with regard to the characterization of its characters. "The elements that really interest us are the concept of talented but ordinary people placed in extraordinary situations," explains Campos-Oriola. "It creates a very interesting dynamic in terms of relationships with others. These are elements that we are looking to integrate into the single-player campaign." Single-player is therefore an element on which the developers are banking heavily, something to please all the fans who have been asking for a worthy campaign for too long.
Leveraging Past Experience
Of course, Motive, which is also working on an Iron Man title at the same time, can also count on its past experiences for this new project. Like, for example, the remake of Dead Space released in 2023. “Dead Space allowed us to discover the particularities and strengths of each of us, and how we complement each other within the team,” explains Campos-Oriola. Ducharme adds: “On Dead Space, we talked a lot about the tension curve. How to move from one rhythm to another, have ups and downs to keep players hooked, and even play a little with their expectations. It’s obviously a little different in a game like Battlefield, but we still kept that mentality.”
What we need to understand by this, then, is that the single-player campaign of Battlefield 6 should not only be reduced to an accumulation of action scenes, but rather seek to offer a balance between the explosive moments expected by fans and calmer scenes more conducive to storytelling. And while such an approach is obviously far from unusual in the franchise's history, it's undeniable that the experience Motive gained on a game like Dead Space bodes well for this new installment.
Multiplayer is not forgotten
Finally, this interview was also an opportunity for the studio to confirm its supporting role in the development of multiplayer, to which it contributes by supporting DICE in the creation of maps. "We're working with their managers and directors to understand what steps to take, what the right approach is to ensure we deliver maps at the high level they've achieved," Ducharme explains on this subject. And he's clearly quite confident in the result. "They're a lot of fun, and I think the results show how hard our teams really worked together to achieve this." We'll obviously be sure to check this out when the time comes, judging the final result for ourselves with the controller in hand. And we shouldn't have to wait too long for that anymore, since if we're to believe the recent statements from Andrew Wilson, CEO of Electronic Arts, Battlefield 6 should be released by March 31, 2026 at the latest. The big announcement should come sometime this summer. Source: Inverse
