Borderlands 4: What's new and what you should know from the State of Play

Last night, Sony and Gearbox offered us a State of Play dedicated to Borderlands 4 to lift the veil on the game while we wait for an even more detailed presentation in June. This is an opportunity for us to discover the game's first heroes, new features, and numerous gameplay clips, promising a game once again rich in loot and possibilities.

Borderlands 4: the main new features

During the dedicated State of Play, we were able to discover a glimpse of two of the four new Treasure Hunters that will be present in Borderlands 4.

The first is called Vex. She is a powerful Siren who has the ability to draw from it a formidable force or to summon deadly shadows that fight at his side.

Then we have Rafa the Exo-Soldier who is a veteran of Tediore. He is equipped with an experimental exo-suit capable of materializing an entire arsenal of weapons.

As in all Borderlands, each Treasure Hunter offers a unique way to play complemented by the most advanced skill tree system to date. to date in a Borderlands game.

This Borderlands 4 takes place on a brand-new planet: Kairos. The latter is seamlessly connected. Players will have to face the Timekeeper, the main threat of this new opus. For thousands of years, the latter has kept the planet secret, controlling its inhabitants with the help of cybernetic implants called Bolts and an army of synthetic soldiers called The Order.

One of the main objectives of this fourth installment will be to travel to the planet to free it from the oppression of the Timekeeper and his army. Of course, you will meet many inhabitants and allies along the way, including familiar faces from the Borderlands universe who will help you in this quest.

During this presentation, we had the opportunity to discover a mountainous and taught region of Kairos. Of course, Borderlands 4 will feature one of the biggest loot races we've had in the history of the series, including:

  • Deadly weapons from eight new and well-known manufacturers, each with their own devastating strengths;
  • A licensed parts system that combines behaviors and abilities from multiple manufacturers into a single weapon;
  • An upgrade equipment slot to augment weapons based on their manufacturer, rewarding with additional firepower when gear is optimized;
  • Ordnance, a shared slot for grenades and heavy weapons like rocket launchers, recharges for a cooldown to keep you ready for action during particularly difficult encounters.
  • The Rep Kit equipment provides a practical feature by allowing players to heal themselves or activate temporary bonuses to turn the tide of an intense battle.

Borderlands 4 will be a single-player game playable in cooperation. This is the main interest of the title. More than ever, the game encourages players to engage in cooperative multiplayer thanks to a new process which allows players to form groups online and stay together when switching between game modes. Borderlands 4 will also be cross-platform upon its release.

As a reminder, Borderlands 4 was expected for September 23, 2025. Alongside the State of Play, Gearbox confirmed that the game's release has been brought forward to September 12 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
