Cheap Google TV smart TVs are about to become more common, but it's not such good news

Smart TV operating systems are great for finding content, managing your favorite programs, or getting recommendations. But they generally require a decent amount of RAM: no one likes to wait in front of their TV while the selection switches from one icon to the next or while an app is launched. Anyone who has tried watching TV with an ISP's Android TV player knows how annoying it quickly becomes.

Waiting in front of the TV

Yet this is likely to happen in the near future. During Google I/O, Shobana Radhakrishnan, the company's director of TV engineering, announced that the company is working with partner manufacturers to "launch affordable and reliable TVs with less RAM." Less RAM means savings on component costs: the initiative will "allow budget-conscious users to enjoy quality entertainment."

Manufacturers can therefore sell cheaper models, while still offering consumers the Google TV "experience." The danger is that this famous experience will be degraded by the lack of RAM... On the other hand, this opens the Google TV market to a wider audience, who will not have to buy a box or a streaming stick.

The Google executive did not specify the minimum RAM requirement. Android TV recently required 1GB of RAM (it was 1.5GB previously), while the richer Google TV interface requires 2GB. We can conclude that these future TVs will be satisfied with 1GB, and perhaps even less.
