Could These Characters Return in Season 3 of The Last of Us? The Series' Creators Speak Out

Season 2 of The Last of Us has come to an end on Max, and we are now waiting for season 3. For the occasion, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, the creators of the series, participated in a press conference, during which they notably discussed the next season and the evolution of the plot. Surprisingly, they were quite talkative and offered some food for thought on what to expect from this sequel.

Of course, it is recommended not to continue reading this article if you have not yet watched season 2 of The Last of Us and want to avoid spoilers. Craig Mazin begins by explaining that season 3 will not be a direct sequel to season 2, but that it will serve to recount events that took place in the background of it. For PlayStation players, this is not really a surprising revelation.

The Last of Us season 3 is already revealed

We will therefore return to the origins of the war between the Washington Liberation Front and the Seraphites. “How did this war start? Why? How did the Seraphites start? Who is their prophet? What happened to him? What does Isaac want? What happens at the end of episode 7? What is that explosion? Everything will become clear,” the showrunner promises in comments reported by Variety.

“We haven’t seen the last of Kaitlyn Dever, Bella Ramsey, Isabela Merced, and a lot of people who have already died in the story,” he added, hinting at the return of characters from the first two seasons seasons in the third. He doesn't guarantee anything, but Neil Druckmann says it's not impossible that Pedro Pascal will play Joel again, in flashbacks, just as actress Anna Torv returned after Tess's death in season 1.

Bella Ramsey (Ellie) has said she fully expects to be there for season 3, but with reduced screen time, with the lion's share being given to Kaitlyn Dever (Abby). But nothing is set in stone yet. “Even though I thought I knew exactly how it was going to go, I've had enough experience to know that in two weeks, we might have a different idea of what's next,” recalls Craig Mazin.
