CD Projekt RED, the studio behind The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077, announces that the upcoming Cyberpunk 2 has reached an important milestone in its development.
In 2020, an extremely ambitious game was released by the studio behind The Witcher trilogy. Completely abandoning the medieval-fantasy universe, the Polish team at CD Projekt RED set out to create a futuristic universe of their own. After years of teasing, Cyberpunk 2077 is finally here. While it has been a commercial success, reviews have been more mixed. This is due to numerous technical issues that the developers will work to correct over time.
Since then, Cyberpunk has surpassed 30 million sales, and CD Projekt RED has announced that a sequel is in the works for 2022. Codename: Project Orion. It is still unclear whether the game will officially be called Cyberpunk 2, Cyberpunk followed by a year, or something else. Some aspects are already known, however: the game will be developed using the Unreal Engine 5 graphics engine, but not directly by CD Projekt RED. A new studio based in Boston will be responsible for this, in collaboration with a Polish team.
The sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 reaches an important milestone in its development
Today, we know that the title is well on its way. On X (Twitter), the CD PROJEKT IR account announced that Cyberpunk 2 has entered the pre-production phase. What does this mean exactly?
To put it simply, this is the moment when the fundamental elements of the game are given shape: its broad story, its gameplay systems, the look of the world in which it takes place (the “world building”)… We take the opportunity to refine and validate the desired artistic direction or even create prototypes of mechanics in order to see what works and what doesn’t.
As you can see, we are still a long way from being able to launch Cyberpunk 2 on our machines. Its release date is still unknown, but it’s safe to say that it’s several years away. Fans will have to be patient, just like those of the witcher Geralt of Rives, since The Witcher 4 will not be available until early 2027 at the earliest.
Congratulations to the team for this milestone ↙️ pic.twitter.com/Uw5EckDvAE
