Google has announced a fix for the numerous battery issues affecting mobile phones since the May 2025 Android update. It seems that the operating system is not at fault here.
Android is identical to Windows in one respect: the operating system is updated at least once a month. This mainly involves correcting security flaws and a few more or less important bugs. Generally, you won't notice any changes unless you yourself were affected by an issue that has since been corrected. And sometimes, you realize that something has changed, but not in a good way.
After the May 2025 Android update, several Pixel smartphone owners have seen their batteries drain at high speed. A major problem that sometimes takes equally annoying forms: the inability to charge the phone and/or constant overheating are also present for the unluckiest. All Pixel models from 6 to 9 are affected according to the various reports. According to Google, that's now ancient history.
Google has had a solution for battery issues since the May Android update
In a very succinct post on the official Google forums, a community manager explains that to resolve rapid battery drain issues, you need to... Update the Instagram app. Just make sure you have version 382.0.0.49.84. Remember that users say that opening certain apps, including Instagram, makes the situation worse.
However, it's surprising that Google wants to blame everything on the social network, since others are experiencing the bug even though Instagram isn't installed on their device. Additionally, we assume the company is referring to the Pixel, but in fact, no smartphone models or Android versions are mentioned.
In any case, updating your apps theoretically can't hurt. From there to stating that this is the solution for everyone affected is a step that we'll be careful not to take before getting feedback.
