Cyberpunk 2: Very good news officially announced

Cyberpunk 2: Very good news officially announced

It's safe to say that, despite its rather chaotic launch, Cyberpunk 2077 has made a fine journey on the road to redemption. While its expansion, Phantom Liberty, has now crossed the ten million copies sold mark, the CD Projekt RED title is now preparing to arrive on Nintendo Switch 2, in a version that seems to pleasantly surprise players. And on the eve of this release, the studio has another piece of good news to share regarding the franchise: things are moving on the Cyberpunk 2 front!

Cyberpunk 2 is entering the pre-production phase

Because yes, the one that was announced in October 2022 under the code name "Project Orion" has recently reached a new important stage in its development. Now identified as Cyberpunk 2 by CD Projekt, we learn from the company's latest financial statement that the game has officially entered its pre-production phase.

A few weeks ago, the CD Projekt RED team, responsible for the next major game set in the Cyberpunk universe, completed the conceptual phase of the project. As a result, Cyberpunk 2 – previously known under the code name Project Orion – has entered the pre-production phase.

Now, we'd like to warn you right away: this obviously doesn't mean that you should expect an upcoming release. Because as MichaƂ Nowakowski, one of the studio's bosses, once pointed out, it takes CD Projekt an average of four to five years to bring a game from pre-production to release. In other words, Cyberpunk 2 shouldn't be released until 2030 at the earliest, which is obviously not an exact science.

A long way to go

Currently, 96 of the 730 developers who make up the ranks of the Polish studio are allocated to the design of Cyberpunk 2. The others are then dispatched to different projects, the main one being of course The Witcher 4, whose production is currently in full swing with 422 developers. Because as we learned at The Game Awards 2024, before we can dive back into the streets of Night City or potentially a new city that looks like a "Chicago gone wrong", new adventures in the world of witchers will await us with Ciri.
