The Justice League is the iconic superhero team of the DC Universe. A cult team that has had many different members over the long decades of comics. This inspired us to look back at the 12 best members of the Justice League over time.
12) Aquaman
Even though the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) has given more credit to the character, notably thanks to the muscular incarnation of Jason Momoa, it's difficult to really get attached to Aquaman. He's an often outdated character, who tries as best he can to stay in tune with the times. It's hard to give credit to his horrid orange costume. It's hard to believe that this guy is playing in the big leagues, alongside characters like Superman and Batman. But Aquaman remains one of the founding members of the Justice League and therefore deserves his place in this top.
11) Shazam
We like Shazam. He's an endearing character, and above all, extremely powerful. His contrast between the identity of a normal teenager and that of a superhero almost as powerful as Superman gives the character its interest. He was popularized in cinema by Zachary Levi, and is one of the oldest characters in the entire history of the DC stable. He appeared for the first time in 1940. At the time, the character was called Captain Marvel. But in 2011, DC decided to rename the character Shazam to avoid any misunderstanding with Marvel Comics' Captain Marvel. Although he is not a founding member of the Justice League, he often works with the famous DC team.
10) Dr. Fate
Dr. Fate is the Dr. Strange of the DC universe. He deals with all occult threats or those related to any kind of dark magic. He also appeared for the first time in 1940 and is therefore an extremely old character in the DC stable. He is also able to see the future of all the characters who cross his path. Also a member of the Justice Society of America, he can be seen in Black Adam, played by Pierce Brosnan.
9) Cyborg
Played by Ray Fisher in the DCEU, Victor Stone is a character who first appeared in 1980. Also a member of the Teen Titans, he is a tortured character, who seeks to accept himself in a society that rejects him for his appearance. A true allegory of racism against African Americans, he is a relatively interesting character but who lacks character. Finally, he really takes on substance when he joins the Teen Titans as a sort of endearing and understanding mentor.
8) Green Arrow
He is the Hawkeye of the Justice League. Created in 1941, Oliver Queen is a simple human armed with a bow and arrows. Joker, flirt, handsome, but always selfless, he is the human side of the Justice League. He is the one who brings all these gods down to human scale. He's the one who brings to mind the weaknesses and vulnerabilities of these iconic characters. Anyway, all this to say that we really like Green Arrow, even if, in terms of power, he's not much use...
7) Martian Manhunter
Created in 1955, J’onn J’onzz is an iconic character in the Justice League. A telepath, shapeshifter, and possessing superhuman strength, he is a rather powerful character within the Justice League. Sometimes disconnected from Earthly and human issues, he often tries to work on his own empathy with humans. Despite everything, very often, Martian Manhunter is ready to sacrifice himself for a species that is not his own and which sometimes spends its time rejecting him.
6) Green Lantern
There have been a lot of Green Lanterns. The first appeared in 1940. But between Alan Scott, Hal Jordan or even John Stewart, it's hard to choose your favorite. We have a soft spot for John Stewart, because he's the one who's part of the Justice League. He was featured in the cult animated film Justice League (2001) by Bruce Timm. And his identity is ultimately much more striking than his peers. In cinema, Ryan Reynolds had the honor of playing Hal Jordan in the very bad film by Martin Campbell, in 2011. Since then, the Green Lanterns have been nowhere to be seen. But things are about to change thanks to James Gunn's DCU, which is preparing a series centered on the Green Lanterns. 5) Hawkgirl
Created in 1940, Hawkgirl is an iconic heroine of the DC Universe. She shares an eternal love with Hawkman. A love that spans ages, eras, and even universes. A close and timeless relationship that we really appreciate. But, given the choice, we have a slight preference for Hawkgirl. She has more character than her husband, she is braver, more violent, more determined. And just like John Stewart, we love the character's portrayal in the series Justice League. Hawkgirl will make her film debut in Superman by James Gunn.
4) Superman
Created in 1933, Superman is the iconic character of the DC universe. There is no real need to introduce him, as there are so many iterations of the character in film and television. The Kryptonian is an iconic, unwavering, self-sacrificing character. He's ready to do anything to protect humanity and his loved ones. We can't wait to see the new adaptation by James Gunn, expected on July 9th.
3) Wonder Woman
She's also a star of the DC universe. Wonder Woman made her first appearance in 1941. She gained enormous popularity thanks to the live-action series led by Lynda Carter in the late 1970s. A strong woman, she is the icon of an entire feminine identity within comics, whether in the DC Publishing House or elsewhere. A true feminist image within the superheroic universe, she gained even more importance in 2017 thanks to the film by Patty Jenkins which still brought in more than 823 million dollars at the box office. A score that proves that blockbusters about female characters can explode the box office!
2) Flash
Created in 1940, The Flash is a bit like the clown of the Justice League. He's a bit like the Spider-Man of the DC universe: a touching teenager who manages his stress with humor, and with impressive self-sacrifice. Immature in his actions, but mature at heart, his powers are pretty cool too. Flash goes so fast that he can even go back in time. An extremely powerful character, then, but with always overflowing humanity. We regret that his treatment in the DCEU and particularly in the film The Flash is so poor...
1) Batman
How can we not end this top with Bruce Wayne. The Dark Knight, the best detective in the world, the Bat who terrorizes Gotham City. His opposition to the Joker, his inner darkness, his irreparable traumas, his ability to always be one step ahead of his adversaries but also his allies. How can you not love Batman? Quite simply, the best superhero of all time...
