Google Messages is testing a video deletion shortcut, a handy option when you're running low on storage on your device.

Since the integration of the RCS protocol into Google Messages, you can send videos and other multimedia content at will without having to use a third-party messaging app like WhatsApp. The use of SMS is becoming rarer in France, as this technology has become too limited for users.

The problem is that we often have at least one person in our contacts who tends to over-share videos, which can quickly result in a saturation of the storage space of their smartphone. Google Messages already allows you to delete them to save space, but an interface change will make this action faster.

Google Messages is hunting down videos

By analyzing the code of the latest beta version of Google Messages, Android Authority discovered that Google is testing adding a trash can icon next to videos displayed in the app's chats. This replaces the share/forward button, which allows you to send the content to another contact. This change only applies to videos, not images or text.

By tapping this new icon, the user can quickly delete the video. Until now, it was necessary to long-press it to display the delete button at the top of the screen. This option is much more practical for deleting many videos on the fly. However, we lose the shortcut to share videos with other contacts. Perhaps Google believes that the delete feature is more useful than the share feature for videos. Forcing users to take an extra step to forward a video can also help reduce impulsive sharing.

The most convenient thing for users would be if Google gave them the choice to customize their experience according to their needs. But for this kind of interface peculiarity, developers often don't give them a choice: everyone is in the same boat. This change is currently being tested and could arrive soon via an update.
