Dragon Ball is a legendary work known to all. Such popularity also comes with many preconceived notions, spread by both the general public and the most loyal fans. Here are 7 ideas about Dragon Ball that are actually completely false. Yet, Vegeta has always beaten Goku. Whether it was during the Saiyan arc or the Buu arc, he was the one who emerged victorious in their fights. The problem is that DBS keeps this idea vague. In the post-credits scene of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Vegeta claims that he has just beaten Goku for the first time. Perhaps he doesn't consider his previous successes as victories... Either way, it's confusing.
#2 Yamcha lost to the Saibaman
Yamcha is the character whose reputation has been the most tarnished. His fight against the Saibaman is a symbol of this dishonor, even though he didn't actually lose it. Yamcha largely dominated the creature, incapacitating it. It was only in a final act of desperation that the Saibaman grabbed onto him to explode itself. Yamcha thus defeated him fairly. For the most discerning, we can say that the fight ended, at worst, in a draw.
#3 Vegeta says "it's over 9000"
Every good Dragon Ball fan has already shouted "it's over 9000!", imitating Vegeta when he discovers Goku's power. Problem: this wording is incorrect. In fact, in the manga, it is 8000 units, not 9000. This error is due to the American dubbing of the anime, which changed the number. We still admit that "9000" sounds better...
#4 Chichi made Gohan weak
Throughout Dragon Ball, we see Chichi encouraging Gohan to study and become a scientist. Many thought that it was because of her that the boy became weaker, but that's a mistake. From the beginning, Gohan has always wanted to study. He only fights when necessary. Indeed, he could be the most powerful in Dragon Ball, and DBS recently showed this with Beast Gohan. If he doesn't train, it's because he's busy either with studies or work, and Chi-Chi has nothing to do with that: it's a personal choice.
#5 Vegeta unlocked Super Saiyan 2 thanks to Babidi
Wanting to become who he was before, Vegeta let himself be controlled by Babidi. In this form, we saw him in Super Saiyan 2 for the first time, which led many people to believe that he had obtained this transformation thanks to Babidi. However, this is not the case. The Super Exciting Guide and Daizenshuu 7 explain that Vegeta achieved Super Saiyan 2 before the events of the Buu arc. Babidi's power boost only puts him on par with Goku.
#6 Kid Buu is the most powerful version of Buu
The debate over who is more powerful, Kid Buu or Buuhan, has raged for years. Kid Buu is strong, very strong in fact, and stands out in the manga as the wildest and most unpredictable Buu. However, as Dragon Ball Z writer Takao Koyama points out, Buuhan is the most powerful. By absorbing Gohan, Super Buu gained unimaginable strength that only the fusion between Goku and Vegeta could counter, something that doesn't happen with Kid Buu.
Let's be clear: Goku is the hero of Dragon Ball. However, he's not one in the classic sense of the word. Unlike Superman or even Luffy, Goku has no "noble" goal. He simply seeks to confront powerful opponents. Of course, he performs heroic deeds by necessity, but that's not his main goal. If some people think otherwise, it's partly because of the different versions of the anime, especially the American one, which presents him as a superhero. Since then, people's perception of Goku has changed a bit, especially thanks to DBS. Today, the character is perceived as an idiot, which, again, is inaccurate.
