The main problem with Dragon Ball Super is its tendency to recycle elements from the original work and its derivatives. The most glaring example is the reuse of Frieza, which leaves little room for new antagonists. So, why write an article like this? Well, since DBS will continue to bring back old villains, we might as well offer some ideas with these five villains whose return could add something to the story.
#1 Cooler
Cooler is a very popular character. Aside from Broly, he's the only villain to appear in multiple movies. He would be a character who would be very easy to insert into the series given the lack of information on his race. Cooler's name has been a frequent topic of discussion lately. Indeed, for the likely final battle looming, many imagine him as a potential ally of Black Frieza. This would be the perfect opportunity to introduce him into the plot and have an antagonist as charismatic as his brother.
#2 Cell
Yes, Cell has already returned in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, but not in the form fans were hoping for. Cell Max was a huge missed opportunity. The reunion with Gohan could have offered a level of fan service never before achieved, but it didn't happen. If DBS returns as an anime, Toei might be well advised to recap this arc by reintroducing the familiar Cell. It remains to be seen whether the studio plans to rework this part, but that's a question we've already addressed in this article.
#3 Janemba
Toyotaro is a huge Dragon Ball fan and doesn't hesitate to slip references into his manga, especially to forgotten characters. This is what he did in the last chapter of DBS by showing a statue of Olibu, a filler character from DBZ also seen in the movie Fusions. If Olibu exists in the DBS universe, then why not Janemba? This iconic villain would allow for a deeper exploration of the afterlife, but in a different way than the film or even GT, which simply introduced as many villains as possible without exploiting the universe. The fan service could, however, be more subtle and touching, by bringing back Son Gohan (Goku's grandfather) or even Bardock.
#4 Shenron Island
One of the good ideas in GT is corrupting the Dragon Balls. Sure, most of the enemies from the spheres are forgettable, but not Shenron Island. After being the main antagonist of GT, he could represent a real threat in a DBS, an anime that is sorely lacking in dramatic tension. Faced with an enemy like him, the heroes, usually protected by the Dragon Balls, would find themselves completely helpless. And if the plot involved the Super Dragon Balls, the situation would become even more catastrophic. So, let DBS take a leaf out of DAIMA's book and draw inspiration from GT, because it would be really worth it.
#5 Slug
The idea of an evil Namekian has already been explored with Piccolo Daimao and his son. Yet, this concept continues to generate interest, as demonstrated by the excitement surrounding Neva in DAIMA. The anime has also proven that there is still much to explore about this race. Some games, such as Dragon Ball Online, have already tried the experiment by introducing Black Nameks and the Narak clan. Bringing back Slug would therefore be an excellent opportunity to revisit this idea. However, it would be necessary to move away from his origin story, which is too close to Piccolo Daimao, while retaining his conquering spirit. To make him powerful, there's no need for a gift from Shenron like with Piccolo: he would simply have to merge with all the inhabitants of his planet, as Gast Carcolh did in Dragon Ball Multiverse. This would allow DBS to kill two birds with one stone by exploiting both the multiverse and the potential of an evil Namekian.
