With the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 just days away, Nintendo is quietly preparing the ground by adjusting its flagship titles. Among them, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has just received a seemingly modest update, but one that is part of a broader strategy of harmonization between the two generations of consoles.
A technical update above all for Animal Crossing New Horizons
Version 2.0.7 of the Animal Crossing game, deployed on May 27, 2025, focuses exclusively on one point: improving the compatibility of multiplayer sessions between the current Switch and the future Switch 2. An unspectacular change on paper, but crucial in the perspective of a smooth transition to the new console model, scheduled for June 5. For players, this means more stable online interactions and a seamless experience, regardless of the device used. Nintendo therefore seems to be anticipating a prolonged coexistence between the two consoles.
It is important to note that this update does not add any new content to the game. Since the very comprehensive version 2.0 deployed in 2021, which marked the end of post-launch support, Nintendo has not enriched Animal Crossing New Horizons in terms of gameplay or events. This patch is no exception to the rule, and therefore does not revive the creative dynamic around the game.
However, this has not prevented a wave of speculation in the community, with some players still hoping for a possible version optimized for Nintendo Switch 2, for example with a better frame rate or reduced loading times. For now, Nintendo remains silent on the subject.
A fuzzy future for the license
The question that divides fans is simple: Is Nintendo planning to extend the life of Animal Crossing New Horizons, or is it preparing a whole new episode for the Switch 2? Opinions are divided. On the one hand, some believe that New Horizons, with its 40 million copies sold, still has enormous commercial potential. On the other hand, observers point out that the logic of the series (and the previous ones on DS and 3DS) suggests a new opus in the coming years.
